Mich. man arrested in Ohio with 20 lbs. of marijuana

A 22-year-old Eastpointe man has been charged with felony drug possession in Ohio after he was caught with 20 pounds of marijuana, officials said Thursday.

Daveonta Reid was charged with possession of marijuana and hashish, both third-degree felonies; improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony; and possession of oxycodone-hydrochloride pills and criminal tools, both fifth-degree felonies, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

If convicted, he could face up to 9 years in prison and up to a $30,000 fine, officials said.

Reid was arrested by Ohio troopers at 3:19 p.m. Nov. 8 after a traffic stop on Interstate 75 in Shelby County, Ohio, according to authorities.

Troopers stopped Reid, who was driving a 2010 Chevy Malibu with temporary Kentucky registration for an impeding traffic violation.

The officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and searched the vehicle.

During the traffic stop, troopers seized 20 pounds of marijuana, one pound of hashish and 11 oxycodone pills, all valued at about $74,280, police said. Troopers also seized a loaded .40 caliber handgun.
