Santa made an early stop at the Walmart on South Bend’s south side Saturday. He was there to help collect nonperishables, toiletries and clothing for the St. Joseph County Battered Women’s Shelter.
A lot of times, the women who have to go there are escaping abusive homes and can only go with the clothes on their backs.
While the shelter helps to provide meals and a safe place for women to escape to, a lot of times they don’t have much help, and donations like these help to fill the gap.
“Since they don’t have everything, I mean who wouldn’t need a clean pair of underwear or a toothbrush? Just simple things like a hairbrush are great,” said Russ Zawacki, of Abate of Indiana. “Hand lotion, they don’t provide hand lotion, but a lot of people need hand lotion. They shouldn’t be in that situation in the first place, but if they are, we want to do something to help them be there.”
Abate of Indiana has teamed up with the YWCA to collect the donations.
Any money collected Saturday will be used to buy other nonperishable items after they do inventory of what was already collected.
