The culinary experience found in a town can be difficult to discover in one day—a University Homecoming weekend event worked to help make that one day taste easier.
The “Taste of BG” event saw restaurants from all over Bowling Green offering samples in the tailgate park of Doyt Perry Stadium the evening of Oct. 13. The event occurred right after the University’s homecoming parade that afternoon in a large tent on the grass.
As part of the University’s homecoming weekend festivities, the sampler was made to help alumni and current students, staff and residents reconnect, socialize and enjoy themselves.
Food for attendees was varied, from the calzones of D.P. Dough near the Stroh Center to the stuffed breadsticks courtesy of Campus Pollyeyes. Other establishments represented included Cookie Jar and Mr. Spots from downtown Bowling Green.
Homecoming court member Alanna Meadows was one of the attendees of the event. One sample she pointed out was a chocolate chip cookie from the Cookie Jar. “It’s a classic, it’s a favorite, and that’s probably the best thing I had tonight,” she said about the treat.
Current residents and students of the University, like Meadows, could attend the event to obtain food from staple neighborhood restaurants for a free price. An appeal for new students of the University to attend the event, however, was to get a better understanding of the city’s food scene.
“Some of my friends were hungry after being in the parade … so we decided to just come over and just try some food BG has to offer,” Lauren Reese said.
While food was the focus of the event, it was complemented by musical entertainment. A disc jockey added beats to the food tent in the early part of the event, and a Michigan-based band, Caught in a Zipper, performed songs as the night went on.
Attendees could also entertain themselves with a free photo booth.
Though a smaller part of the homecoming weekend, Taste of BG kicked off the celebrations by helping alumni reconnect with the establishments of the city as well as current people attending or working at the University.
