A Columbus man driving a Meals on Wheels van reported stolen in Dayton led police on a short chase before being stopped and arrested, according to reports.
Franklin D. Scales, 41, is charged with felonious assault, fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, receiving stolen property and driving while under suspension. He is being held in the Fayette County Jail.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office tells the Columbus Dispatch that deputies were called to the parking lot of a Love’s Travel Center at Interstate 71 and U.S. Route 35 after someone spotted a man removing the license plates from a white cargo van.
When deputies arrived, Scales drove off, nearly hitting one of the deputies and clipping a semi, WCMH Channel 4 reports.
Scales is accused of leading the deputies on a short chase that hit speeds of 80 mph before he was stopped by troopers with the State Highway Patrol. He was then arrested without incident.
The Dispatch reports the van was reported stolen Wednesday morning from Senior Resource Connection in Dayton. There was no food inside the vehicle.
