A woman suspected of shoplifting from a Walmart died early Thursday morning after crashing her pickup truck during a high-speed pursuit with police.
Troopers with the State Highway Patrol tell the Dayton Daily News that the 1995 pickup truck driven by Misty B. Sorrell, 40, of Springboro, Ohio, lost control on a curve and struck a tree and fence, ejecting her.
The incident started at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday when Franklin Township police officers were called to a Walmart over suspicions that two people were shoplifting, Fox 19 reports.
One suspect, a male, ran from the store while the other suspect drove off in a pickup truck.
When a police officer spotted the truck on a nearby street, he turned on his patrol car’s lights but the truck sped off, reports say. Moments later it crashed.
Franklin Police Chief Russ Whitman tells WLWT Channel 5 the department will review the chase, which also is under investigation by the State Highway Patrol.
“The initial look at the pursuit video, we don’t see any issues with it,” he tells Fox 19.
The officer involved in the chase has not been put on special duty during the investigation.
“These can affect the officers,” Whitman tells WCPO Channel 9. “It is a younger officer, so we’ll make sure he’s taken care of.”
Police are still trying to identify the male shoplifting suspect.
