Welcome to this analysis of the first teaser for Star Wars Episode 9, The Rise of Skywalker. To prepare this article, I scoured Reddit and its “subreddit” because it must be admitted that after the split of the fans following The Last Jedi , I had a little let go! A teaser and it starts again.
I suggest you keep theories about the title for later and start with the analysis plan by plan.
On 1’34 new images of the film, we have almost 1 minute, two thirds of the teaser, devoted to this scene of Rey facing a TIE Interceptor in a desert.
Duel in the sun of Tatooine?
Can not guess which planet it is, of course, but if it’s a planet we already know, it could be Jakku or Tatooine, knowing that Jedha’s surface probably does not look like that anymore. is probably no longer breathable since the destruction of Jedha city seen in Rogue One .
Knowing that this teaser is full of references to the past, yes the one that The Last Jedi wanted to put aside, Tatooine seems to me a plausible choice.
We eat a TIE tonight?
What’s interesting is that three scenes of the teaser seem to unfold there: the face to face between Rey and TIE Interceptor, Poe Dameron and Finn who would watch the scene from a distance and then the pursuit between the troopers of the First Order and Poe, Finn and C3PO on a barge very similar to those of Return of the Jedi .
Is there a Kylo on the plane?
Let’s go back to face to face. Rey knows that the TIE Interceptor is coming in and his breathing tells us that this is probably not their first confrontation. Two questions then arise: is it a training, an attack or something else? And who is piloting the ship?
The glove plan seems to indicate that Kylo Ren is in charge, even if the juxtaposition of the shots may just make us believe it.
However, when we look at the TIE Interceptor, it looks like Kylo Ren, but that would have been modified with a new cockpit and precisely this red hue that reminds something else … and yes, the weld lines joining the pieces of Kylo’s helmet ! The coincidence seems too strong and I think that it is really Kylo who pilot.
Training or serious attack?
Once this is done, is it an attack or a training? I would say “neither,” but clearly, an attack of this type in TIE Interceptor would be totally stupid, unless the aircraft could not fly properly or fire with its cannons.
However, on Rey’s side, the intention seems to be to hit the hunter with his sword, which seems to indicate a form of confrontation or reunion, but without Kylo’s willingness to kill Rey.
To return a little back, we notice the plan with the sword of Anakin and Luke alongside the blaster offered by Han Solo. This sword was destroyed in The Last Jedi, when Rey and Kylo tried to lure him by force.
It is supposed that Rey was able to fix it, especially since it will have been a year since the end of the episode 8.
In this scene, the voiceover, that of Luke Skywalker, is essential.
The presence of Luke Skywalker
He suggests that he himself, Yoda and other masters like Obi-Wan perhaps, came to Rey to teach him their knowledge, exactly what Luke refused to do in episode 8, preferring to drink green milk .
We can also assume that Rey had time to consult the documents of the Jedi order she had taken away.
Thousand generations live in it now, but it’s his fight and every generation has its legend.
Another way for JJ Abrams to include this film in the past of the saga, a message in opposition to that of episode 8 which had destroyed everything to precisely leave only Ben Solo as the main antagonist, which will no longer be the apparently.
The vessel of Rey’s parents?
We then see an unidentified ship approaching a city in mountains surrounded by clouds. We can think of the flying city of Lando or the dark atmosphere of the planet Eadu in Rogue One.
Some have pointed out the similarity between this ship and the one that Rey remembers when she was abandoned as a child on Jakku. Mystery.
Elsewhere in the galaxy, Kylo seems to continue to reign the terror in fights in the forest, with snow, that does not spoil us much, all in a sort of glowing apocalypse.
The opponent he slams on the ground is equipped with a rudimentary weapon, rather an infantryman of nothing than a Knight of Ren if you want my opinion.
Will Kylo Ren reconnect with his Darth Vader obsession?
We note that it is not human hands that work to tinker with Kylo’s helmet. Anyway, this rebuilding might eventually involve some kind of comeback of the idea that Kylo will want to finish what Anakin Skywalker has started, but I’ll come back to it.
There follow two scenes of spectator characters. First of all, I think of Rey and Kylo face to face, with Finn in particular holding Rey’s stick which would be too bulky for his antics then BB8 and DD0 a new little droid, who bend their heads to see something … maybe the head of Rian Johnson who discovers this teaser?
The nostalgia card is played with Lando Calrissian knowing that Billy Dee Williams is 82 years old, and yes, hopefully he has at least revised his code before the hyperspace jump.
The teaser then warns us that the saga is coming to an end.
And yes the ambition is clearly here to bring a final point to three trilogy, something not obvious without writing script in advance for the last three films, but hey, we’re never safe from a miracle, let’s cross our fingers, (those of the feet too.)
The pursuit race on the desert planet seems to go through a field of water harvesting with these kinds of antennas that are intended to capture the humidity of the air. Or it is the least unobtrusive minefield in the world, for you to see.
Soldiers in landspeeder and jetpack, that’s new that, are in pursuit of Poe, Finn and company and, as usual, they shoot no matter how.
Poe Dameron must have thought that on the surface, these antennas were still what looked more like the shot of the asteroid field eventually found in one form or another in 90% of the Star Wars chases and all existing space opera.
We then have a quick shot of an A-Wing-type ship that seems to graze a Destroyer, but in an atmosphere, not in space.
Leïa and Carrie Fisher’s memory
This is probably the hand of Leïa while watching the medal of Han Solo, remember, they had been given after the victory of episode 4.
The hug of Rey and Leïa comes from unused scenes of episode 7 and there is always emotion is true in the images of the late Carrie Fischer.
The young heroes are apparently on the planet Endor, still a return to episode 6, facing a huge fragment of the second death star, everything suggests that it is Endor and therefore the second star.
Two ruins for the price of one!
Indeed, while the voice of Luke ensures that no one has ever really left for good, we hear the resounding laughter of Palpatine alias Darth Sidious that was believed gone for good.
I must admit that this laugh had a double effect on me. At first a kind of excitement despite myself, after all Palpatine is one of the most fascinating characters in the Saga and certainly the most devious and powerful villain.
Right after, I laughed, thinking that the writers were forced to fetch to try to put issues after the clean slate left by Rian Johnson in episode 8.
Obviously, JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio, who wrote the screenplay together, did not want a finale leaving Kylo Ren as the only incarnation of the challenge waiting for the heroes, so they went to dig up Grandpa Palpatine. Although Kathleen Kenedy said that this return was planned from the start, I have a doubt.
What significance for this title?
I’ll go back to the theories around Palpatine, but let’s go back to The Rise of Skywalker first .
This title is perhaps the first expression of Luke’s rise to the status of Force Ghost, but that seems a little too obvious.
Some assume that Skywalker would become the name of a new order that would come up with a form of syncretism between the beneficial use of force and inclusion of emotions that the Jedi made the mistake of rejecting en bloc.
An order that would approach the idea of gray Jedi for connoisseurs (some will cry scandal, relax!)
We learn in the novel, Thrawn Alliances that the language of the Chiss, of which the great admiral Thrawn is a member, refers to the term “sky walker” of young users of the force capable of providing space navigation instead of a computer .
It would be a way to bring a conclusion to the famous opposition between the bright sides and the dark side, knowing that the Skywalkers often sailed at the edge between the two.
It is assumed that The Rise of Skywalker will have multiple meanings, knowing that among this one could well find a form of redemption for Ben Solo who has skywalker blood.
To return to the notion that he must complete what Anakin has begun, one might think of a decisive role in putting an end to the threat that Darth Sidious poses.
Darth Sidious, Palpatine, is back
Exactly, what can explain this return of Sidious?
First there is the hypothesis of clones. Indeed, the Sith are not supposed to be able to access the status of ghost of the force, they are too selfish for that, suddenly, Sidious would finally have succeeded in reincarnating his spirit in a previously planned body.
The idea of a clone would be tricky and one would wonder why we would not have heard of Palpatine earlier.
It seems to me more interesting that Sidious remained for a long time stuck in an intermediate state, his body being destroyed, but his spirit escaping death and remaining attached to the debris of the black star.
This ability could come from the teachings of Darth Plagueis evoked in this famous passage seen and reviewed from episode 3 when everyone was wondering about the true origin of Snoke. We may even discover a connection between Snoke and Palpatine elsewhere.
The real threat between the worlds?
But how can one explain that a mind stuck in a wreck is so dangerous? This is where the theory of his access to the world enters the worlds, a concept that appeared in an episode of Star Wars Rebels season 4, a series that is part of the official Canon.
The world between the worlds is a bit like the quantum realm of the MCU since it allows you to move in time and space.
If Palpatine knew such a place, he could change the course of time as he pleased and rule the universe.
Well, we can also doubt that such a level of complexity was chosen and perhaps Darth Sidious will be especially presented as able to influence many people in the universe simply because of his incomparable mastery of the dark side.
