Ohio (WTRF) – Within the next few years, drivers and walkers will soon see a new route across the Ohio River.
It’s all part of the new Wellsburg-Brilliant Bridge and construction has already started on the Ohio side.
“What you’re currently seeing in Brilliant is a temporary trestle being built out into the river to gain access for the main part of the bridge. We’re soon going to start drilling for the pier foundation for the main river span,” said Joe Juszczak, District 6 Construction Engineer.
Officials said the 830 ft. bridge will cut down the current 17 mile trip between the two cities of Wellsburg and Brilliant, a reality many residents have put up with for years.
But while cutting down the drive is something to be excited about, residents believe the new bridge will also make an economic impact too.
“I think it will be good for the economy. I think it will bring, hopefully, new businesses to both sides of the river. It would be nice to go across and patronize some of the diners over there and hopefully people will come over here too,” said TJ Wright, a Brilliant resident.
Of course, construction is only in the beginning stages.
But you’ll see more progress sooner than you think.
“Probably sometime in early spring, you’ll finally see some permanent structures of the new bridge. Then, in early January, we’ll start building a temporary trestle on the West Virginia side,” Juszczak said.
Juszczak added that they’re currently relocating utility lines on the West Virginia side.
They hope to have the with the entire project completed by 2021.
